Brilliant Breil-sur-Roya

Breil-sur-Roya is a small town that is located between Sospel and Tende right at the Southern end of the Upper Roya Valley. The town is in an attractive location sitting at the bend of the Roya river surrounded by steep hills. If you are visiting Provence, it may well be worth making a pit stop here. At the centre of town, there is a parking space that is very close to the old town and the tourist office, so this is where you should start your visit.

Take a stroll

First you should take a leisurely walk along the river banks to get a sense of the town and appreciate its surrounding landscapes. The forested hills that rise steeply around the town are indeed very impressive. Next you should wander around the central square and perhaps sip a coffee at the café. Breil-sur-Roya serves as home to three religious monuments. These include:

Religious monuments

The Church of Sancta Maria which is the town’s main church. The church was constructed during the last forty years of the 17th century and has a baroque façade that was added at the start of the 18th century. Make sure you go inside the church so you can catch a glimpse of the extensive marble decoration, wonderful painted ceiling and glided capital stones. You should also pay a visit to the Chapel Sainte Catherine which has a neo-classical façade and was constructed against the town ramparts.

The bell tower

Finally make sure to visit the Chapel of the Misericorde which is a baroque style church built during the 17th century. Of all three religious monuments, this one has the most interesting church which unfortunately has been neglected. You should pay special attention to its dome and bell tower which are covered in coloured tiles.

Attractions nearby

Many people who visit Breil-sur-Roya will also use the opportunity to take a tour of the Upper Roya valley which is extremely picturesque. On your tour, you can visit the village of Saorge which is just a few kilometres North of Breil. Alternatively, you could visit La Brigue which is a mountain town and very interesting, plus you have the ability to explore the Mercantour National Park.
