Ferry to France Travel Increases Due To Eurotunnel Fire

Post by admin | September 16, 2008 | Trips to France | 1 Comment

Hundreds of motorists are now making the trip from Dover to Calais via the sea, after a huge fire left Channel Tunnel schedules in chaos .

Damage to the tunnel is currently being assessed after their worst fire in 14 years of operation. The fire, which broke out on a truck shuttle train, had temperatures reaching 1,000°C and is likely to disrupt cross-Channel rail services for months.

The fire, which burnt for nearly 24 hours, broke out 11km before it reached France and forced hundreds of firefighters from both sides of the Channel into evasive action. The tunnel’s closure caused chaos for travellers, with many truck and car drivers making the cross channel journey by ferry instead.

Eurotunnel services should be able to resume on a restricted, single-track basis within the next 2 weeks.

Following a fire in one of the two rail tunnels of the Channel Tunnel on 11 September 2008, Eurotunnel resumed some services in the undamaged tunnel within just 30 hours and the full range of services over the following days. Working around the clock, Eurotunnel then swiftly reintroduced two-thirds of the affected tunnel within weeks, thereby increasing its capacity.

While it has continued to operate a reduced service as works are completed on the damaged section of the Tunnel, Eurotunnel is set to fully resume operations by mid-February 2009.
