Even though we are separated by just a few miles of ocean, the UK and France can sometimes seem like world’s apart. With some amazing coastlines and an outstanding pedigree for gastronomic delicacies, French culture is something us Brits sometimes take for granted due to it’s proximity. But as the world’s current financial crisis looms over Europe, more and more people are choosing to holiday a lot closer to home, and you don’t get any closer than France.
With easy access via rail, ferry or plane, France is a great holidaying destination. With fantastic weather, long sandy beaches, chateux’s, historical towns, and of course the fabulous food and wine available, more and more people are choosing to spend their vacation there than ever before. Below is a guide to some of the most interesting and diverse places to visit in France. Whether you want to ski, scuba dive, sight see or simply chill out on the beach, France has a wide range of destinations to satisfy a complete smorgasbord of tastes.
FRENCH RIVIERA
The French Riviera is on France’s South Eastern coast and is home to the ultra exclusive regions of Saint Tropez and Cannes. Known for it’s hot weather, golf courses and 115km of beaches, the Riviera is the place to see and be seen in France. With easy access via Nice Cote d’Azur Airport (the second biggest airport in France) the french Riviera is a fantastic holiday destination whether you are travelling with the family, in a couple, or travelling alone looking for a mysterious multi-millionaire to sweep you off your feet!
NICE
Also in the South east of France, Nice offers a slightly more relaxed and less expensive environment than nearby Cannes. Nice enjoys a hot Mediterranean climate and is a historic old town with lots of heritage. Nice is France’s 2nd most popular tourist destination behind Paris, with lots to see and do, including the annual Nice Jazz Festival.
AIX EN PROVENCE
In Southern France, the area of Aix-en-Provence is seen by many as a city of culture and craft. Home to art schools and several universities, the area attracts a youthful population as an important educational centre. Aix-en-Provence, which is twinned with Bath, also holds two important music events each year. The Musique dans la Rue Jazz concert, and also the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence Opera festival, founded in 1948.
ANTIBES
The Antibes is located between Cannes and Nice and is well know as a tourist hot spot for people who like to party. There are 48 different beaches and a great selection of restaurants, bars, casinos and nightclubs around the Juan les Pins district for tourists who like to let there hair down and unwind in the sun.
RHONE ALPS
To the east of France is the Rhone Alps region, named after the Rhône River and the Alps mountain range. Famous for having the world’s largest ski area and having hosted the Winter Olympics 3 times, the Rhone Alps region is also a hive of activity during the off season. Boasting some 60 golf courses alongside internationally renowned football clubs Olympique Lyonnais and Saint-Etienne, The Rhone Alps is a France’s sporting paradise.
BRITTANY
A well regarded cultural area in the North West of France, Brittany is famous for its chateauxs, manors and old fortified towns and is an important link between France and England. Brittany features some of Europe’s most amazing coastlines and is well known for it’s gastronomic treats and warm weather during the summer months.
BORDEAUX
One of the wine capitals of the world, the name Bordeaux instantly cunjures up images of sipping a sumptuous red. With over 13,000 grape growers and 10,000 wine producers in the area, Bordeaux has a history of wine production that dates back all the way to 48AD. A great place to visit vineyards, and of course sample a few of the local delights, Bordeaux also features a historic old town with many old churches and cathedrals to visit.
BIARRITZ
On the south western coast of France at the the tip of Spain is Biarritz, well known for it’s beaches and surf festival. The waves around Biarritz are of international quality, making this the European capital of surfing, with many surf schools and agencies. There is also diving, white water rafting and a great selection of superb golf courses dotted around, which make Biarritz a must visit destination for those who love outdoor activities.
STRASBOURG
Located in the North West of France, Strasbourg is the capital city of the Alsace region. Home to the Council of Europe, Strasbourg is an important city for manufacturing and engineering. A clean and beautifully preserved city, Strasbourg is popular destination for people who like to wander around and discover architecture both old and new. Plus with Kronenburg being based here, it’s also a great place to have a beer!
