Chateauneuf-en-Auxoisis a small village in Burgundy which is less than half an hour’s drive South-West of Dijon in the Cote d’Or department. Chateauneuf-en-Auxois is officially listed as one the most beautiful villages in France and when you get there, it will not be hard to see why this is case. The village’s name is often reduced to Chateauneuf and used to be an important resting place for people travelling through the region. Its most important attraction is the castle in the town – the Chateau Chateauneuf-en-Auxois. The castle played an important part in defending the road which leads to Autun.

Exploring Chateauneuf-en-Auxois

Chateauneuf-en-Auxois sits atop a hill and is very attractive. On one end the chateau is located on a low rocky spur and dominates the rest of the village. The original castle can trace its origin back to the 12th century when a medieval fortress was first built. However, during the 14th century and the Hundred Years War there were a number of defensive walls and substantial towers that were added. During the 15th century, the castle was once again modified with living quarters added, to make it a nicer place to live.

Great place to tour

You will be fascinated when you visit the castle at Chateauneuf-en-Auxois because it is easy to tell when the modifications were made because each period is clearly visible. The oldest part of the castle is its tower and the most recent part of the castle is its carefully furnished living accommodation. The village surrounding the castle started to develop between the 12th and 15th centuries and most of the houses can trace their origin back to that time. There are plenty of fine merchant houses in the village from that time that were constructed from the local yellow white stone. A more recent addition to the village is the church which was constructed in the 15th century which is also well worthy of a visit. If you like pretty little French villages then you will simply adore Chateauneuf-en-Auxois
