French Driving Holidays

One great way of holidaying in France is by driving there from the UK. If you plan on doing this, then you should be aware of the driving regulations which are different from those in force in Britain.

The most obvious difference between the UK and the rest of Europe is right hand side driving. This takes a little getting used too, but within a few hours it will be something you grow accustomed to.

The French system is one of toll roads called péage’s, this means it will be useful to have some Euros in your pocket before you travel. If you find yourself without, then there is the option to pay with debit or credit cards, so long as you are at the correct toll booth.

péage’s, are usually very well sign posted, you get your ticket at the start and pay when you leave. Toll booths are usually on the left hand side because European vehicles are left hand drive, so you should be aware of that. Toll prices can accumulate, so you should ensure you accommodate them when you budget your holiday. Another option is to choose a driving route which uses slower roads that don’t require payment of a toll.

French speed limits are similar to those in Britain, with distances measures in kilometers rather than miles. Urban areas usually have a 50 km/h speed limit, once you are outside the limit increases to 90 km/h and 130 km/h on the motorway.

If you are a lover of French wine, make sure you intake does not exceed 0.005 per cent, as this will result in drunk driving penalties. Starting from July 1st, all vehicles are required to have Breathalyzer and fines will be levied on non compliant drivers.

If you are travelling to France and renting a vehicle, all your regulatory problems will be solved. The car will come with everything required under French law, and it will also be a left hand drive vehicle.
